Water Softener Update
Within the last year, we have experienced numerous problems with our water softener system. Several times, our water service was interrupted due to breakdowns in the system. We had to have on hand emergency air compressors to charge the system. These were not a part of the original installation and were needed to force the system to operate properly. We had service technicians from Culligan (the original installer) in to service the system on several occasions and for various different malfunctions.
A few months ago, we had a meeting with a Culligan rep and a plumber to help us understand, identify and make suggestions as to why we were having so much trouble with the water softener system. Their ultimate conclusions were as follows:
The original system installed is not adequate enough to handle the needed capacity of water use. A substantial upgrade to the system was recommended. This upgrade would also require an alternate high-capacity pump to move water to the East building. The estimated cost for all of this extensive work was in excess of $70,000. Since we were facing a continuing battle with roof leaks and the need to replace part of the West building’s roof area, we decided that with our financial situation at the time, we would resolve the roofing issues first and forego any and all fixes to the water softener system. We are currently still not sure whether the water softener system is worth the fix. We have been bypassing the system for about the last 3 months and will continue to do so until we see the need for an upgrade to the system and our finances are not needed for other capital projects.
With regard to the issue of the water itself. We have not recently consulted with Sewickley Water Authority. In many conversations with other plumbers and residents of other local complexes, and with Sewickley Water Authority in the past, the white residue that may build up around sitting water or droplets is an inherent occurrence for many customers of the Sewickley Water Authority.
It is entirely up to you if you want to consult a water quality specialist to see if they can install something in your unit to help you to manage your own water quality concerns. However, if you do intend to have work done by an independent water quality contractor, we must be notified in advance of contracting with anyone so that we may review and approve the work to be done on your unit.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
